The Whit King, Jr., Free Enterprise Foundation
|
The foundation was established in 2006 to honor the passion, persistence, and vision of Jesse Whitfield King, Jr., to support economics education in Alabama. From his time as a student in the Wiregrass Region at Dothan High School, until his retirement as a Senior Vice President of AmSouth Bank, Whit King, Jr., led an active life convinced of the value of hard work and the rewards to be gained from the American free enterprise system.
Whit's belief in the free enterprise system was dear to his heart. While living in Decatur, Whit co-founded "Free Enterprise Day" during which individuals from the education and business community swapped roles for a day - a tradition that was observed for 25 years.
Whit was on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Council on Economic Education for four decades, served as its president and chairman, and was the volunteer full-time Executive Director (acting chairman) for the years 2000 and 2005-2007. He worked tirelessly to help educate Alabama's K-12 teachers and students about the free enterprise system. Because of these extraordinary efforts, the Whit King, Jr., Free Enterprise Foundation was established and, in 2008, he received the William A. Forbes National Award for Public Awareness presented by the national Council for Economic Education.
Jesse Whitfield King, Jr., passed away August 23, 2017, The foundation will continue to honor his lifetime commitment by annually awarding The Whit King, Jr., Prize to teachers who embody Whit's passion for free enterprise, economics, and personal financial responsibility.
